Wine Bottle Failure Analysis

November 4, 2019 By Tom Read Leave a Comment

Glass Expert at Read Consulting performed a glass failure analysis on a broken wine bottle. The objective was to determine the root cause of the bottle failure.Markings on the fracture surfaces (Wallner Lines) were used to trace back to the fracture origin to determine the cause of failure.

Conclusion: The cork extraction force combined with the rough edge of the cork screw crushed the glass at the top of the bottle and created a crack that was driven downward by the extraction of the expanded cork. Eventually the top separated from the bottle causing an injury. The story of the failure is explained by the photographs shown below.

Figure #1: Pieces of broken wine bottle submitted for analysis. The bottle had broken into 2 pieces.
Figure #2: Photo of bottle top with the cork screw inserted also showing the crack.
Figure #4: Photomicrograph of the bottle top. This shows the crushed glass under the cork screw “prop”. The crack originated at the point of the crushed glass. This failure was not caused by a bottle defect.
Figure #3: Another photo of the bottle top showing the crack directions as determined from examining Wallner lines on the fracture surfaces.
