Auto Front Suspension Failure Analysis: Rubber Fatigue

March 30, 2020 By Tom Read Leave a Comment

Read Consulting performed a failure analysis on a failed automobile front suspension. The suspension failed causing the automobile to veer and crash. This suspension included a large rubber “disc” that absorbed part of the suspension deflection energy. Because this is system is in the front, it is critical for  steering and maintaining vehicle control. In this case the rubber failed as a result of fatigue, and the driver lost control of the vehicle. Analysis of the rubber showed that it had failed from fatigue. This is apparent from the fatigue stria on the fracture surface.  This is a progressive failure and was not a result of the  accident. Both the failed suspension and the mating one on the opposite side were examined.  The intact side shows a tear indicating that a fatigue crack has started. Please see the photos below:

Mating Suspension on the opposite side of the vehicle. Even though this suspension is intact, there is a tear indication the start of a crack
This is the interior portion of the failed rubber suspension piece. This failure is a result of rubber fatigue. The failure started on the top and progressed downward. This is indicated by the fatigue stria in this photo. The arrows show the crack growth direction.
