Read Consulting performed a failure analysis on a failed automobile front suspension. The suspension failed causing the automobile to veer and crash. This suspension included a large rubber “disc” that absorbed part of the suspension deflection energy. Because this is system is in the front, it is critical for steering and maintaining vehicle control. In this case the rubber failed as a result of fatigue, and the driver lost control of the vehicle. Analysis of the rubber showed that it had failed from fatigue. This is apparent from the fatigue stria on the fracture surface. This is a progressive failure and was not a result of the accident. Both the failed suspension and the mating one on the opposite side were examined. The intact side shows a tear indicating that a fatigue crack has started. Please see the photos below:
